Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives

The CEA, the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives) is a French government-funded technological research organisation. CEA is a prominent player in the European Research Area in the domains of low-carbon energies, defense and security, information technologies and health technologies.

Based at the heart of a very strong scientific, industrial and academic environment, located both in Saclay and Grenoble, the Technological Research Division research is focused on the development of new technologies in the fields of energy, on health information and on communication. From fuel cell to microsystems, or from materials to biochips, the Technological Research Division is on the cutting the edge of the technological research and has a very active role in transfering kowledge towards industry.

CEA through its Nanocaracterization and NanoSafety Laboratory (LNN) located in Grenoble on the NanoSafety Platform (PNS) is strongly involved in Europe on Nanosafety since it hosts and organizes every two years at Minatec one of the most important international conference dealing with all the nanosafety issues called Nanosafe conference. CEA-LNN participates in the Nanosafety Cluster on Materials, Exposure and Risks working groups. CEA has a recognized expertise in nanoparticles measurement, detection, and characterization in gas and liquids, complex media and at workplace. This knowledge is used for occupational, consumer and environmental exposure measurements, confinement barriers efficiency testing, personal protective equipement effiency testing, and release studies of nanoparticles from nanoproducts.

Among others, CEA-LNN coordinates the NanoID project which is a French national platform dedicated to detection and identification of nanoparticles in complex matrix (solid, liquid, and gaseous) by their chemical nature and structure as a function of their size distribution together with their concentration . CEA-LNN is also involved in Marina, NanoReg and Future Nano Needs on the assessment of exposure to nanomaterials and human protection along the NP value chain. Moreover, CEA-LNN has largely developed for more than 5 years the assessment of the potential exposure of workers at workplaces. To date, more than 270 workplaces have been studied in various fields (aeronautics, environment, microelectronics, research laboratories, cosmetics, food, steel industry ...).
